TIME: 1–2 July 2017 from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The 12-hour photomarathon is open to everyone. Contestants take photographs in Inari, focusing on a theme given by the judges. Each contestant may enter two photos in the competition.

The judges announce the theme at the start of the photomarathon. The photographs must be submitted to the organisers by Sunday 2 July 2017, 6 a.m. Photos must be submitted on a memory card, and the organisers save them on a computer. Contestants are not allowed to edit their photos.  The aim of the photo marathon is to assess photography skills, not editing skills.


The photomarathon lasts for 12 hours. It starts on Saturday 1 July 2017 at 6 p.m. and ends on Sunday 2 July 2017 at 6 a.m.


The photo marathon starts at the auditorium of at Santa’s Hotel Tunturi in Saariselkä at 6 p.m.


The participants included in the photo marathon are the first 100 people according to the order of registration. Registered participants at the Nightless Night Photography Workshop receive an automatic right to participate in the photo marathon. The admission fee is included in the price of the workshop.

The competition is also open to others at an admission fee of EUR 50/person. The fee must be paid in advance, by Friday 23 June 2017. Please register at Only registered participants who have paid the fee may take part in the photo marathon.


The only permitted camera type is a digital camera. Smartphone cameras and helicopter cameras are not accepted. Photographs taken from an aircraft are also not accepted.


Memory cards must be formatted before the start of the competition.


The theme will be announced at the event venue at the start of the competition, at 6 p.m. The duration of the competition is 12 hours. Photos must be taken between 1 July 2017, 6 p.m. and 2 July 2017, 6 a.m. All the photographs must be submitted before the competition closes and uploaded on the panel’s computer straight from the camera.

Photos may not be edited or retouched. If the camera can take HDR or panorama images, these are not accepted in the competition.

However, colour settings (black and white, sepia, etc.) may be used. All photographs must be taken by contestants.


The photo series entered for the competition are judged by the Nightless Night Photo Marathon panel, including professional photographers Christoffer Collin and Eeva Mäkinen, and a representative from the Northern Lapland Camera Club. The contestant with the best photograph wins the competition. Christoffer Collin is the chairman of the panel.


Three contestant with the best individual photos will receive an honorable mention and gift voucher. The award ceremony will be held at the auditorium of Santa’s Hotel Tunturi on Sunday 2 July 2017, starting at 12 noon. The winning photos will also be published in Kamera magazine and on the magazine’s website.

Kamera magazine has the right to publish the photographs entered for the competition on its website and in the issue released after the competition. The magazine may only publish the photographs once. The Northern Lapland Camera Club and the Arctic Light project have the right to publish the photographs in connection with presenting the photo marathon results, without separate compensation. Third parties may also publish the winning photographs for the purpose of marketing and promoting the photo marathon. Each photograph may be published once and without separate compensation. Any other releases of the photographs to third parties are forbidden. All other rights to the photographs remain with the photographers.


The main idea behind the competition is that the contestants take photographs in Inari municipality over a period of 12 hours. The contestants may move about freely during the competition period, using their preferred modes of transport. The contestants may also use transportation organised by the event during the competition.


The organisers have not insured the contestants or equipment during the competition. Please make sure that your accident insurance is valid. If you encounter a traffic or other accident, call the emergency number 112.
